Help & FAQ

Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about the NewKnee app and our clinical study.

Quick Overview

What is the app about?
For a study conducted by the Department of Orthopedics and Sports Orthopedics at the TUM University Hospital, the app collects your health metrics from Apple Health, questionnaires regarding your knee and satisfaction, and periodically asks you to perform gait and knee range-of-motion tests.
Does it take a lot of time?

At specific intervals, the app will prompt you for knee joint and gait tests and ask you to complete questionnaires. This usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes.

Otherwise, the app automatically evaluates health parameters from your smartphone in the background.

General Information

What is the purpose of the app?
The app helps to objectively and subjectively record your recovery process before and after the implantation of a knee prosthesis. It does not replace medical advice and was developed solely for research purposes.
Who can participate?
Patients who meet the study's inclusion/exclusion criteria and own a compatible smartphone (ideally with an Apple Watch). Details can be found in the study information sheet.

Privacy & Consent

Who sees my data?
Only the authorized study team. Data is stored pseudonymized and processed according to GDPR. Personal identification is only possible via an internal list accessible to specific scientists.
How long is the data stored?
Data will be deleted no later than 10 years after the study is completed. If consent for use in further studies is given, the period applies from their respective completion.
Can I revoke my consent?
Yes, at any time within the app under Settings → Leave Study or via email to newknee.ortho@mh.tum.de.

Technology & Health Integration

Which health metrics are read?
Only the categories you explicitly authorize (e.g., steps, walking speed). The app only reads data (Read-Only) and does not write any data to your health system.
Do I need to wear a smartwatch?
Not strictly required, but some metrics (like the ROM mobility test) are only possible with an Apple Watch. Without a watch, the remaining parts of the study remain accessible.
